Had to do
the last minute internet stuff at the hotel in the morning. Not sure Cuba has the
best connection possible. So we Skyped - and mailed our travel update to
friends and family. Walked to the airport after check out from hotel, got
through the migration in no time - two new stamps in the passport, boarded the
airplane and left for Cuba .
Arrived in Havana on time. Got
through yet another immigration queue – the last one on this trip – and got our
luggage after another security check. Bumped into Anders as soon as we left the
customs area. How GREAT ! He had a car ready for us – old US, pink Cadillac, looked
great from the outside and ok from the inside but it was easy to see that it
could use a lot of maintenance.
Drove from
the airport to the centre of Havana
where our Casa Particular was. Anders was also staying there. Not too much
traffic and lots to look at on our way.
Got a nice
room – not at casa Miriam but on the other side of the road. Unpacked our stuff
(as much as you unpack when you’re backpacking), and headed over to Anders for
a drink.
Realised
that you get a nice thirst for rum as soon as you arrive in Cuba so we had
a lot of rum, some bubble and a few beers before we decided to go out and have
more drinks at a local bar. Anders knew a place where they had music and some
food so we walked there.
Spent the
rest of the evening (and night) at the bar. Had our first experience with Cuban
food (you take what you get and enjoy the rice). Suddenly at 2 in the morning
the electricity failed in the entire neighbourhood including the bar. We took
that as our farewell call and paid the bar tab and left for our casa. Had a bit
of difficulty finding our way back to Casa Miriam. Perhaps because of too much
rum. I don’t think so however. J
