Left early
for our bus to Vinales. Taxi to the bus station and then a bit of chaos because
our seats had been “sold” twice. So the bus company had to pick a few unlucky
passengers off the bus before we could board.
Drove 5 minutes to the next bus
station only to meet Anita and Knud from the casa. They were also on the way to
Vinales. Drove for a couple of hours towards Vinales on the partly finished and
very empty highway. The guidebook mentioned the possibility to meet bikes,
horse carriages, onion sellers as well as the occasional car. It was certainly
true. Lots of unfinished fly-overs witnessed how the Russians had left the
country in a hurry when the cold war ended some 20 years ago – and the Cubans
didn’t have resources to finish the project. Just another chapter in our many
bizzaro experiences.
Arrived at
Vinales to be “greeted” by some 50 wild women who all wanted us to stay at
their casa. We chose one and walked with her for a short while before arriving
at her house a bit from the main street. Nice porch and a few mohitos helped us
digest the bus trip. Not too bad to just sit in the shadow and enjoy the nice
weather. Decided to find a place for some lunch so we walked back to town and
found a place where we could get some food. Not that everything mentioned in
the menu was available but we managed to get what we wanted – almost.
Walked a
bit outside town in the afternoon and enjoyed the countryside. Very quiet with
some activity here and there. Some really old farming tools that looked liked
they belonged to a museum. Found a small shop near the road where a farmer sold
his produce and bought a fresh pineapple and had it sliced and served on the
spot. Totally heaven.
Walked back
to town, relaxed in the afternoon, had dinner – good – at our casa before we
went to local bar for some drinks in the evening. So many horseriding questions
from our host familiy. Seriously considering moving soon – but tomorrow we will
head for the beach. Hope the weather is good.
